I was at the peak of my corporate career — twenty years in, about to be promoted to Vice President at Allianz. I had built everything they told me to build. I had become everything they told me to become. And then my heart started pounding so hard I had to excuse myself from the room, in front of everyone. I left that boardroom on a stretcher. The shame was total.
That moment is why I call this Crucible. Because a crucible is what holds something under extreme heat until it either breaks or becomes something stronger. I broke first. Then I rebuilt — and learned what I wish someone had taught me twenty years earlier.
